Shoes

There are hundreds of climbing shoe models available today, making the choice daunting. Climbing shoes should fit tighter than street shoes and shouldn’t be comfortable for walking. Sizing should account for stretch, which can range from ¼ to 1 size depending on the model and material.

There are two main types of shoes: aggressive (downturned) and neutral (flat).

Although both types are acceptable, climbers tackling V4 or 5.11 and above are encouraged to consider more aggressive models for precise footwork. Intermediate and advanced climbers training three or more times per week should invest in two pairs: a tighter, aggressive pair for sending and a looser, non-aggressive pair for training. This helps prevent foot and toe irritation.

Climbing shoes come in lace, velcro, and slipper options. Bouldering climbers benefit most from velcro or slippers, while rope climbers can opt for laces.
