FOOT TENSION CHALLENGE

Climbing

Footwork Drills

15-20 min, climbs 3-4 grades below redpoint. Footwork drill! Do this on steeper (30-60*) gym climbs or on a systems wall. The goal is to start to understand the difference between active footwork and passive footwork. Think of your feet as hands and visualize pulling onto each foothold, as you would with a handhold. Do not let your feet cut (ie. keep one foot on the wall at all times) no matter what. Even if it makes a move more difficult or awkward. Focus on “squash the bug” on each foot hold, especially on smaller footholds, and maintain tension from your big toe all the way up your leg. Your lower body should be engaged the entire time. If you do cut feet on a move, come down, rest 2-3 min, and try again.
