HEELHOOK DRILL

Climbing

Footwork Drills

3-5 climbs, 3-4 grades below redpoint. Choose climbs on overhanging walls (30-60*). The goal is to do as many heelhooks as possible on each climb. Try to turn as many footholds as possible into heels, even if it doesn’t necessarily make sense to heelhook there. Don’t just place your heel on the hold– engage your entire leg, including calf + hamstring, and use that to reel your hips into the wall. The goal of this drill is to get better at heelhooking on more technical holds and to utilize active heels rather than passive ones.
